Investigation of the chemical changes during the thermal treatment of acrylonitrile-co-methyl acrylate-polymer (polyacrylonitrile-precursor) focusing on the fate of the methyl acrylate moiety

Klaus Ruhland et al.

Summary: This study investigates seventeen samples of AN-co-MA-polymer with various MA contents using selective isotopic labeling and thermal treatment, revealing methanol as a key volatile from the MA sub-unit and the formation of methylamines from ammonia reaction with the MA sub-unit. Detailed reaction mechanisms are concluded, highlighting the importance of ammonia as a stoichiometric and/or catalytic reagent in all processes.

Activated carbons effectively purified by post-heat treatment under vacuum conditions

Junam Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of heat treatment and vacuum conditions on the properties of activated carbons, finding that treatment under vacuum conditions led to higher specific surface area and improved electrochemical performance. It was suggested that thermal treatment under vacuum conditions could remove oxygen-containing functional groups and volatile matters, thereby enhancing the performance of activated carbons.

Summary: A new terpolymer was synthesized for developing carbon fiber precursors for supercapacitors, with itaconic acid (IA) as a porogen and vinylimidazole (VIM) to optimize the properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based fibers. The resulting CFs of terpolymers exhibited higher specific surface areas and superior electrochemical performances compared to PAN or corresponding copolymers.
