Reducing Trap Density in Organic Solar Cells via Extending the Fused Ring Donor Unit of an A-D-A-Type Nonfullerene Acceptor for Over 17% Efficiency

Jixiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The high trap density in organic solar cells is a major limitation for improving power conversion efficiencies. This study demonstrates that extending the donor core of nonfullerene acceptors from a heptacyclic unit to a nonacyclic unit efficiently reduces the trap density in the solar cells. This approach not only increases the mobility and inhibits charge-carrier recombination, but also achieves an impressive power conversion efficiency of 17.1% with a low nonradiative recombination energy loss.

High Miscibility Compatible with Ordered Molecular Packing Enables an Excellent Efficiency of 16.2% in All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells

Lili Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a strategy to alleviate the conflict between small domain and ordered packing in ASM-OSCs by modulating molecular interactions to achieve good miscibility and packing simultaneously. The optimized morphology with multi-length-scale domains and highly ordered packing resulted in a record efficiency of 16.2% in ASM-OSCs, demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach in designing high-performance organic solar cells.

Reducing Energy Disorder in Perovskite Solar Cells by Chelation

Yiting Jiang et al.

Summary: A series of fullerene dyads were designed and used as electron transport materials in inverted perovskite solar cells. Among them, FP-C8 showed the best performance in terms of energy disorder and morphological stability. Devices using FP-C8 as the electron transport material achieved higher power conversion efficiency compared to those using traditional PCBM. Moreover, FP-C8-based devices exhibited better moisture and thermal stability.

Extraordinarily High Minority Charge Carrier Lifetime Observed in Crystalline Silicon

Bernd Steinhauser et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in surface passivation technology and wafer pretreatment have significantly improved the achievable minority charge carrier lifetime in crystalline silicon. The main limitation identified in this study is likely caused by silicon bulk recombination, possibly due to impurities. Despite these limitations, the measured lifetimes on p-type and n-type crystalline silicon wafers exceed previously reported values.

Progress and prospects of thick-film organic solar cells

Yilin Chang et al.

Summary: With the continuous improvements in laboratory-scale organic solar cell performances, the development of efficient OSCs with thick active layers compatible for large-area printing processes is crucial for commercialization. Despite achieving high power conversion efficiencies using non-fullerene acceptors in thin-film OSCs, thick-film OSCs still lag behind due to increased charge recombination probability. Developing highly efficient photoactive materials for thick-film OSCs to exhibit optimal charge generation and transport morphology is essential for transitioning to industrial high-throughput manufacturing.
