Effects of Elemental Modulation on Phase Purity and Electrochemical Properties of Co-free High-Entropy Spinel Oxide Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jagabandhu Patra et al.

Summary: High entropy oxide (HEO) is a new type of lithium-ion battery anode with high specific capacity and excellent cyclability. By controlling the chemical composition, HEOs with high phase purity can be synthesized. The oxygen vacancy concentration plays a crucial role in the rate capability and reversibility of HEO electrodes.

Direct observation of elemental fluctuation and oxygen octahedral distortion-dependent charge distribution in high entropy oxides

Lei Su et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the atomic structure-chemical bonding-property correlations in high entropy oxides (HEOs) using four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques. They observe compositional fluctuations, metal-oxygen bond distortions, and variations in metal-oxygen bonding covalency in a series of HEOs, and correlate these atomic features to the distinctive magneto-electronic properties of the materials.

Ultra-dense dislocations stabilized in high entropy oxide ceramics

Yi Han et al.

Summary: Dislocations are commonly present and important in metals, but their effects in oxide ceramics have not been fully recognized. This study demonstrates that a high-density edge dislocations can be stabilized in oxide ceramics with increased compositional complexity, leading to enhanced fracture toughness. This research provides a controllable approach to establish ultra-dense dislocations in oxide ceramics.

Summary: The research found evidence of a 7 nm-thick interface layer in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films, with structural and electronic properties distinct from the bulk of the film. It observed a structural shift of Mn ions coupled with oxygen vacancies and a reduced Mn valence state within such layer for the first time.

High-Entropy 2D Carbide MXenes: TiVNbMoC3 and TiVCrMoC3

Summary: A study reports the synthesis of multi-principal-element high-entropy M4C3Tx MXenes, including two new high-entropy MXenes and their precursor MAX phases. The research utilized various characterization techniques to determine the structure and distribution of four transition metals in high-entropy MAX and MXene phases, along with first-principles calculations for formation energies. Experimental results show that using three transition metals instead of four can lead to the formation of two different MAX phases under similar synthesis conditions, highlighting the significance of configurational entropy in stabilizing high-entropy MAX phases.

Magnetic properties of high entropy oxides

Abhishek Sarkar et al.

Summary: High entropy oxides (HEOs) are single phase solid solutions with extreme chemical complexity, containing multiple elements in equiatomic proportions incorporated into the cationic sub-lattice. The unique feature of HEOs lies in their unusually large number of different metal-oxygen-metal couples, which can affect magnetic correlations and potentially lead to stabilization of unconventional spin-electronic states. Further research and exploration of potential functionalities in HEOs are discussed in this Frontier article.
