Capturing the swelling of solid-electrolyte interphase in lithium metal batteries

Zewen Zhang et al.

Summary: Characterizing liquid-solid interfaces remains challenging due to the limitations of existing tools. This study adopts a thin film vitrification method to preserve and study the structure and chemistry of key interfaces in batteries. The research reveals substantial swelling of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal anodes in different electrolytes, with the swelling behavior correlated to battery performance.

Clarifying the Relationship between the Lithium Deposition Coverage and Microstructure in Lithium Metal Batteries

Qidi Wang et al.

Summary: This study clarifies the fundamental origins of lithium deposition coverage in lithium metal batteries. It reveals that lower concentration electrolytes result in higher nucleation densities and higher lithium deposition coverage, but unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation limits cycling reversibility. In contrast, higher concentration electrolytes lead to the growth of large deposits, but the initial low nucleation density prevents full coverage, compromising lithium metal density. By utilizing a nanostructured substrate, nucleation density is increased, achieving higher deposition coverage and more compact plating in intermediate concentration electrolytes, thus extending the reversible cycling of batteries.

Eutectic Electrolytes Composed of LiN(SO2F)2 and Sulfones for Li-Ion Batteries

Yosuke Ugata et al.

Summary: This study assessed the applicability of ternary eutectic electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. Compared to binary electrolytes, ternary electrolytes have a wider operating temperature range and higher lithium ion transference number. The use of ternary electrolytes allows for highly reversible charge-discharge processes of battery electrodes.

Dissolution-Precipitation Dynamics in Ester Electrolyte for High-Stability Lithium Metal Batteries

Huicong Yang et al.

Summary: The research shows that using ethylene glycol diacetate in ester electrolyte can prevent the recombination of anions and cations, increasing the solubility of LiNO3 and achieving lithium metal batteries with high Coulombic efficiency and long cycling life. Low permittivity solvents can change the solvation structures of cations and increase the solubility of salts by preventing the recombination of anions and cations.

Potentiometric Measurement to Probe Solvation Energy and Its Correlation to Lithium Battery Cyclability

Sang Cheol Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a potentiometric technique was introduced to quantitatively characterize the impact of Li+ solvation energy in battery electrolytes on performance, revealing a correlation between cell potential and cycling stability. We found that solvents weakly binding to Li+ lead to improved cycling stability, as weaker solvation results in an anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphase that stabilizes cycling. This potentiometric measurement provides a guide for engineering effective electrolytes for lithium metal anodes.
