Optimizing the Catalytic Activity of Pd-Based Multinary Alloys toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Wissam A. Saidi

Summary: The discovery of a low-cost PdAuAgTi alloy as a catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with excellent activity and low overpotential is reported in this study. A model based on first-principles methods accelerated with deep learning is developed to calculate the adsorption energy on the alloy surface, which provides precise maps of the catalytic activity distribution. The study also reveals that the ORR activity of the PdAuAgTi alloy is optimum in a specific composition range.

Unravelling Composition-Activity-Stability Trends in High Entropy Alloy Electrocatalysts by Using a Data-Guided Combinatorial Synthesis Strategy and Computational Modeling

Lars Banko et al.

Summary: This paper presents a combinatorial strategy for acquiring large experimental datasets of multi-dimensional composition spaces, and applies it to the study of the Ru-Rh-Pd-Ir-Pt system. By comparing with computed electrochemical activity, deviations of compositionally complex solid solutions from theoretical model assumptions in experiments are investigated.

Emergence of local scaling relations in adsorption energies on high-entropy alloys

Wissam A. Saidi

Summary: This study evaluates the applicability of scaling rules on high-entropy alloy surfaces for hydrogen-containing molecules and finds a local linear dependence between the configuration-averaged adsorption energies, which hinders the optimization of multistep reactions.

Complex-Solid-Solution Electrocatalyst Discovery by Computational Prediction and High-Throughput Experimentation**

Thomas A. A. Batchelor et al.

Summary: High entropy alloys, composed of five or more principal elements, offer a paradigm shift in electrocatalysis by providing millions of unique active sites with diverse arrangements of multiple elements neighboring a binding site. Utilizing a data-driven discovery cycle helps in mastering the multidimensionality challenge posed by this catalyst class, leading to the development of refined computational models for predicting activity maxima. This method can identify optimal complex-solid-solution materials for electrocatalytic reactions in an unprecedented manner.

Optimization of High-Entropy Alloy Catalyst for Ammonia Decomposition and Ammonia Synthesis

Wissam A. Saidi et al.

Summary: The successful synthesis of high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles opens up a new frontier in materials science, particularly in the fields of catalysis, structural alloys, and energetic materials. Using computational modeling, a model was built to rapidly calculate the adsorption energy of H, N, and NHx species on CoMoFeNiCu alloy surfaces, showing that a specific Co/Mo ratio can enhance the ammonia decomposition activity.
