Construction of single-atom copper sites with low coordination number for efficient CO2 electroreduction to CH4

Shaomin Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, a single-atom copper catalyst based on MOF was successfully synthesized using a plasma-activated strategy, leading to increased oxygen vacancies and catalytically active copper sites. The hierarchically porous structure created by plasma treatment enhanced the adsorption of reactant molecules, resulting in improved activity for CO2 electroreduction to CH4. This strategy demonstrates the feasibility of preparing single-atom catalysts under mild conditions.

The world-wide waste web

Johann H. Martinez et al.

Summary: The study investigates the international waste trade network from 2001 to 2019, identifying countries at risk of improper waste handling. Chemical tracers are utilized to determine the environmental impact of waste in these countries. The research reveals that most hazardous waste is traded among developed nations, but there is a disproportionate asymmetry in the flow from developed to developing countries. By using a dynamic model, the study simulates the propagation of waste stress through the network and its impact on countries. It identifies 28 countries with a low Environmental Performance Index that are at high risk of waste congestion and improper handling of hazardous waste. Evidence of pollution caused by heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, and persistent organic pollutants is found in several of these countries due to improper waste handling.

Assessment of the validity of the quenching method for evaluating the role of reactive species in pollutant abatement during the persulfate-based process

Lingwei Gao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of various quenchers on the mechanism of a cobalt mediated peroxymonosulfate (Co(II)/PMS) process and found that these quenchers not only quench target reactive species but also cause interference effects. Therefore, caution should be exercised when applying the quenching method to investigate the mechanism of the persulfate-based process.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by iron-biochar composites: Comparison of nanoscale Fe with single-atom Fe

Zhuoqian Li et al.

Summary: A convenient and efficient method for fabricating isolated Fe single-atom catalysts (ISA-Fe/MC) on Myriophyllum aquaticum-based biochar was reported for peroxymonosulfate-based organics degradation. Compared to Fe nanoparticles anchored on biochar, ISA-Fe/MC demonstrated better catalytic performance for phenol degradation, attributed to its unique structure and atomically dispersed Fe species facilitating electron transfer for activation.

Critical Impact of Nitrogen Vacancies in Nonradical Carbocatalysis on Nitrogen-Doped Graphitic Biochar

Zhonghao Wan et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped graphitic biochar (NBC) has shown potential for nonradical carbocatalysis in environmental remediation, with nitrogen vacancies playing a more critical role than nitrogen dopants. Through sophisticated thermo-mechanochemical manipulation, the study demonstrated that nitrogen vacancies exhibited higher affinity towards PMS molecules, resulting in superior carbocatalytic performance. This research sheds light on the understanding of nitrogen doping technology and its application in next-generation biochar design.

Yuehan Cao et al.

Summary: The surface electron density significantly affects the photocatalytic efficiency, which can be manipulated by regulating the direction of electron transfer through CdS vacancy types and controlling the size of Au nanostructures. This manipulation leads to effective CO2 photoreduction by increasing the availability of electrons for the reduction process.

Persulfate Oxidation of Sulfamethoxazole by Magnetic Iron-Char Composites via Nonradical Pathways: Fe(IV) Versus Surface-Mediated Electron Transfer

Jun Liang et al.

Summary: This study developed two efficient magnetic iron-char composites and investigated the efficacy of nonradical pathways for PS activation in degrading SMX. The BCFe-400/PS system showed high stability and efficiency in continuous degradation of SMX, while the BCFe-700/PS system displayed recovered reactivity after thermal treatment. Both systems exhibited high performances for SMX removal in various water matrices, highlighting the great merits of nonradical activation methods.
