Dynamically Formed Surfactant Assembly at the Electrified Electrode-Electrolyte Interface Boosting CO2 Electroreduction

Wangxin Ge et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of bias potential on the interfacial microenvironment and catalytic selectivity using CO2 and H2O electrochemical co-reduction on commercial electrodes with surfactant additives. The results reveal that the bias potential leads to a transformation of the surfactant structure from random distribution to ordered assembly, which regulates the water environment and promotes CO2 enrichment at the electrified interface. This hydrophobic-aerophilic interface microenvironment reduces the water dissociation activity and increases the selectivity of CO2 electroreduction to CO.

Effects of Benzyl-Functionalized Cationic Surfactants on the Inhibition of the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in CO2 Reduction Systems

Oriol Gutierrez-Sanchez et al.

Summary: By substituting a methyl group of the quaternary amine in hexadecyl cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) with a benzyl group, a new cationic surfactant cetalkonium chloride (CKC) was developed, which increased the hydrophobicity of the electrode surface and promoted the inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO2 reduction. Experimental results showed that CKC exhibited higher Faradaic efficiency and selectivity compared to CTAB, opening up new research avenues for the application of surfactants in the field of electrocatalysis.

Dynamic Boundary Layer Simulation of Pulsed CO2 Electrolysis on a Copper Catalyst

Justin C. Bui et al.

Summary: The study found that pulsed electrolysis induces dynamic changes in pH and CO2 concentration near the Cu surface, leading to an enhanced faradaic efficiency of C2+ products. By exploring various pulse shapes, operating conditions that maximize the rate of C2+ product formation while minimizing the rates of other products formation can be established.

Approaching 100% Selectivity at Low Potential on Ag for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to CO Using a Surface Additive

Aya K. Buckley et al.

Summary: The discovery of a quaternary ammonium surface additive has significantly improved the Faradaic efficiency for CO2 reduction on Ag surfaces. By increasing CO production and decreasing H2 production, it also demonstrated the crucial role of cationic modifiers in determining reaction selectivity.
