Provider Perspectives on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Service Disruptions and Adaptations During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Baltimore, Maryland: A Qualitative Study

Joseph G. Rosen et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had significant impacts on the demand for and provision of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services. While telemedicine made PrEP more accessible to some clients, barriers to telehealth engagement and limitations of the virtual care environment hindered efforts to equitably promote and prescribe PrEP. Expanding the outreach workforce and providing alternative options to telemedicine could facilitate the continuity of PrEP care.

Acceptability of technological solutions for overdose monitoring: Perspectives of people who use drugs

V. W. L. Tsang et al.

Summary: The study identified individuals who use drugs alone in private residences as being at higher risk of overdose deaths, with some potentially avoiding supervised consumption sites due to fear of stigmatization, lack of privacy, or personal preference. While there is a positive attitude towards using smartphone applications to mitigate opioid-related overdose deaths among the surveyed population, these technological applications may not be suitable for individuals with inconsistent access to cellphones, concerns about anonymity, or a strong emphasis on personal comfort while using drugs. Thorough needs assessments and understanding the perceptions around cellphone and overdose monitoring could increase the potential uptake of such devices.

Women's multiple uses of an overdose prevention technology to mitigate risks and harms within a supportive housing environment: a qualitative study

Geoff Bardwell et al.

Summary: The study found that participants not only used the overdose response button technology to deal with drug overdoses, but also unexpectedly adopted other methods, such as response to emergency situations like gender-based violence. This highlights the limitations of current technology and the clear need for housing-based emergency response interventions that address not only drug overdose risks, but also gender-based violence.

High willingness to use drug consumption rooms among people who inject drugs in Scotland: findings from a national bio-behavioural survey among people who inject drugs

Kirsten M. A. Trayner et al.

Summary: The study found that the majority of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Scotland are willing to use a drug consumption room (DCR), with even higher willingness among PWID in Glasgow city centre and other Scottish city centres. Those who are willing to use DCRs often exhibit more drug-related risk behaviors such as injecting heroin, cocaine, being homeless, public injecting, and experiencing an overdose.
