Quantification of murine myocardial infarct size using 2-D and 4-D high-frequency ultrasound

Melissa M. Dann et al.

Summary: Ischemic heart disease is a leading cause of death globally and in the United States and Canada. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using echocardiographic techniques to measure the size of myocardial infarction. Both two-dimensional and four-dimensional echocardiography methods were reliable in assessing the infarct size, with four-dimensional analysis providing a more comprehensive view of left ventricle function and structure. Strain analysis on four-dimensional data also accurately identifies infarct size and regional left ventricular dysfunction. These techniques can enhance our understanding of the impact of pharmacological interventions on cardiac disease.

Association of Traumatic Brain Injury With the Risk of Developing Chronic Cardiovascular, Endocrine, Neurological, and Psychiatric Disorders

Saef Izzy et al.

Summary: This study found that any severity of TBI is associated with an increased risk of chronic cardiovascular, endocrine, and neurological comorbidities in patients without baseline diagnoses. Comorbidities occurring after TBI are associated with higher mortality, suggesting the need for targeted screening program for multisystem diseases after TBI.

Experimental Myocardial Infarction Elicits Time-Dependent Patterns of Vascular Hypoxia in Peripheral Organs and in the Brain

Helene David et al.

Summary: The study utilized in vivo photoacoustic imaging to track changes in vascular oxygen saturation in multiple organs and the brain post-myocardial infarction. Results showed a correlation between LV sO(2) and cardiac dysfunction, with global hypoxia observed in the brain, kidney, and liver shortly after MI, but returning to pre-MI levels after 7 days.

Traumatic Brain Injury: An Age-Dependent View of Post-Traumatic Neuroinflammation and Its Treatment

Clement Delage et al.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide, leading to inflammatory responses, white matter injuries, and neurodegenerative pathologies. The consequences of TBI and pharmacological responses vary with age, emphasizing the need for age-specific approaches in therapy development.

Improving characterization of hypertrophy-induced murine cardiac dysfunction using four-dimensional ultrasound-derived strain mapping

Frederick W. Damen et al.

Summary: High-frequency four-dimensional ultrasound technology, along with standardized analysis procedures, can extract left-ventricular global function, morphometry, and regional strain metrics simultaneously. A novel hybrid strain index (HSI) formula demonstrates superior performance in characterizing disease progression in a model of metabolic cardiomyopathy compared to other metrics.

Usefulness of Cerebral Oximetry in TBI by NIRS

Malgorzata Barud et al.

Summary: Near-infrared spectroscopy for measuring cerebral oximetry is important for traumatic brain injury patients, as it helps diagnose inadequate cerebral oxygenation and accelerate treatment implementation. Limitations of this method should also be considered.

Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity in Moderate-to-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury and the Role of Beta-Blockers: A Scoping Review

Stephane Nguembu et al.

Summary: This study collated existing evidence on the role of beta-blockers in treating paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity in patients with moderate-severe traumatic brain injury. The results showed that propranolol was effective in reducing hospital stay and mortality rate, but further studies are needed to define its precise conditions of use.
