Hepatic Steatosis Assessment as a New Strategy for the Metabolic and Nutritional Management of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Ya-Chun Tang et al.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) have an increased risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study investigated the potential risk factors for MetS and hepatic steatosis in different stages of DMD. The results showed that ultrasound NPI increased with DMD progression, and a high proportion of the patients had significant hepatic steatosis.

Pharmacotherapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in Babies and Children: A Review of Approved and Experimental Therapies

Claudia A. Chiriboga

Summary: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a degenerative neuromuscular disorder characterized by loss of spinal motor neurons. SMN-targeted therapies, such as mRNA therapies and gene transfer therapy, increase SMN protein levels and significantly improve symptoms in SMA patients.

Glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy types 2 and 3

Stefan A. Djordjevic et al.

Summary: A cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the prevalence of glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) types 2 and 3. The study found that a significant proportion of patients with SMA had prediabetes and dyslipidemia, particularly in non-ambulatory overweight/obese patients. Young underweight patients might develop fasting hypoglycemia.

Bone mineral density and its influencing factors in Chinese children with spinal muscular atrophy types 2 and 3

Xiaoyin Peng et al.

Summary: Low bone mineral density and osteoporosis are common in mainland Chinese children with SMA types 2 and 3. Phenotype and serum parathormone level may influence bone mineral density. Regular monitoring of bone mineral density by DXA scan and active interventions for different types of SMA children are crucial.
