Effect of crystal orientations and precipitates on the corrosion behavior of the Al-Cu alloy using single crystals

Feng Wen et al.

Summary: The study found that the corrosion rates of Al-Cu alloy are mainly influenced by the atomic density of crystal planes and the corrosion product film. The precipitation of precipitates can lead to anodic dissolution of the nearby matrix, accelerating the corrosion rates of the alloy.

Effects of alloying concentration on the aqueous corrosion and passivation of aluminum-manganese-molybdenum concentrated alloys

Jia Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of alloying concentration on the aqueous corrosion behavior of aluminum-manganese-molybdenum (Al-Mn-Mo) alloys were investigated. The study showed that an increase in Mo concentration improved the corrosion resistance and resulted in the formation of a more compact and less defective passive film.

Multiphysics modeling and uncertainty quantification of tribocorrosion in aluminum alloys

Kaiwen Wang et al.

Summary: The research developed a finite element based multiphysics model to analyze the synergistic effects of mechanical and corrosion properties on tribocorrosion degradation mechanisms. Residual stress near the wear track edge led to concentrated corrosion current, causing non-uniform surface corrosion and stress-corrosion coupling which affected the tribocorrosion rate. Predictive tribocorrosion rate maps were generated based on material properties, showing that metals with specific properties are most resistant to tribocorrosion.

Ultrahigh tribocorrosion resistance of metals enabled by nano-layering

Wenbo Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that nanostructured metallic multilayers (NMMs) exhibit ultrahigh tribocorrosion resistance due to abundant interfaces and nanoscale chemical modulation. The experimental and computational study provides guidance for future material selection and design of multilayered and multi-phase metals for use under extreme environment. Through nanolayering, the surface work function of Al was increased while Cl adatoms adsorb less strongly than that on pure Al, reducing surface reactivity and pitting susceptibility.

Modeling Current Transients in a Reciprocal Motion Tribocorrosion Experiment

Claes-Olof A. Olsson et al.

Summary: The tribocorrosion of passivating metals is a dynamic phenomenon that can be analyzed through experiments with good fits and correlations with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Parameters from rubbing experiments were used to calculate curves that matched well with passivation transients recorded on bare metal surfaces, assessing the relative resistance contributions from various factors.

The tribocorrosion mechanism of aluminum alloy 7075-T6 in the deep ocean

Zhengyi Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the wear behavior of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy in a 3.5% NaCl solution under different hydrostatic pressures and presented a tribocorrosion model. The results showed that the interaction of mechanics, chemistry, and electrochemistry accelerated the tribocorrosion process under high hydrostatic pressure. Corrosion-induced wear was identified as the main failure factor of the aluminum alloy under high hydrostatic pressure.
