Dissecting functional degradation in NiTi shape memory alloys containing amorphous regions via atomistic simulations

Won-Seok Ko et al.

Summary: The study used molecular dynamics simulations to understand the functional degradation of nano-scaled NiTi shape memory alloys containing amorphous regions. The influence of amorphous-like grain boundaries or surface regions on the mechanical response under cyclic compression was revealed. The degraded superelasticity under cyclic loading was attributed to accumulated plastic deformation and retained martensite from a synergetic contribution of amorphous and crystalline regions, with proposed methods for recovery and sustainable operation.

Nanocomposite NiTi shape memory alloy with high strength and fatigue resistance

Peng Hua et al.

Summary: This study improved the fatigue resistance of NiTi shape memory alloys by utilizing a hybrid heterogenous nanostructure, producing a superelastic nanocomposite with high recoverable strain and yield strength. The synergy of nanosized amorphous and crystalline phases at the nanoscale was found to enhance properties, making it an effective method to improve fatigue resistance and strength of the alloys.

Atomistic simulations on orientation dependent martensitic transformation during nanoindentation of NiTi shape-memory alloys

Won-Seok Ko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the orientation-dependent mechanical responses of nickel-titanium shape-memory alloys during nanoindentations, highlighting the importance of anisotropy in martensite formation. The results suggest that the orientation-dependency of indentation load-depth curves is primarily driven by the anisotropy in the preferred growth direction of the martensite phase and the amount of martensite phase formed beneath the indenter tip.

Ultrahigh cycle fatigue deformation of polycrystalline NiTi micropillars

Peng Hua et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that micropillar polycrystalline superelastic NiTi has a longer fatigue life under compressive stresses of 1 GPa and 1.5 GPa compared to bulk polycrystalline NiTi samples. This is attributed to the elimination of internal micro-voids and surface scratches in the micropillars, which suppress crack nucleation and propagation mechanisms.

A medium-range structure motif linking amorphous and crystalline states

Si Lan et al.

Summary: Amorphous materials lack long-range order but exhibit ordered structures at short and medium range, with the nature of medium-range ordering often remaining elusive. A study of an intermediate crystalline cubic phase in a Pd-Ni-P amorphous alloy revealed a six-membered tricapped trigonal prism cluster (6M-TTP) as the medium-range ordered structure. The structural link between the amorphous and crystalline phases at the medium-range length scale was demonstrated, highlighting the role of 6M-TTP clusters in distinguishing crystalline and amorphous phases.

Shear localization in metallic materials at high strain rates

Na Yan et al.

Summary: The development of adiabatic shear localization is governed by three factors: strain hardening (or softening), strain-rate hardening, and thermal softening. In metallic materials, the formation and evolution of adiabatic shear bands at the nano and micro scale are associated with the transformation of grains, and modern experimental and computational techniques provide a deeper and predictive understanding of this phenomenon.
