Treatment of Critical Size Femoral Bone Defects with Biomimetic Hybrid Scaffolds of 3D Plotted Calcium Phosphate Cement and Mineralized Collagen Matrix

Anna Carla Culla et al.

Summary: Composite materials and tissue-engineered bone grafts are important in bone repair. This study investigated the bone regenerative potential of hybrid scaffolds made of macroporous calcium phosphate cement (CPC) and microporous mineralized collagen matrix (MCM). The hybrid scaffolds showed more newly formed bone and enhanced biomechanical strength compared to other groups.

3D Plotting of Calcium Phosphate Cement and Melt Electrowriting of Polycaprolactone Microfibers in One Scaffold: A Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Process

David Kilian et al.

Summary: The fabrication of patient-specific scaffolds for bone substitutes can be achieved through a multi-technological approach, combining extrusion-based 3D printing of calcium phosphate cements (CPC) with melt electrowriting (MEW) of polycaprolactone (PCL) microfibers. The hybrid scaffolds feature a high degree of customization, interconnected porosity, strong mechanical support, and improved cellular growth rate.

Toward Biofabrication of Resorbable Implants Consisting of a Calcium Phosphate Cement and Fibrin-A Characterization In Vitro and In Vivo

Tilman Ahlfeld et al.

Summary: Biphasic bone constructs consisting of CPC and fibrin gel loaded with MSC were developed for the potential treatment of cleft alveolar bone defects. In vitro evaluation showed rapid degradation of fibrin in the presence of MSC, with MSC eventually migrating to the CPC surface, indicating fibrin gel as a cell delivery system.

Extrusion-Based 3D Bioprinting of Gradients of Stiffness, Cell Density, and Immobilized Peptide Using Thermogelling Hydrogels

Merve Kuzucu et al.

Summary: By utilizing carboxylated agarose as a bioink, objects with gradients of stiffness and cell concentration can be printed. Furthermore, functionalization of carboxylated agarose with maleimide moieties that react with a cysteine-terminated cell-adhesion peptide enables the printing of objects with a gradient of an immobilized peptide.

Adapting the Pore Size of Individual, 3D-Printed CPC Scaffolds in Maxillofacial Surgery

David Muallah et al.

Summary: 3D printing allows for customizable CPC scaffolds with varying pore sizes for bone augmentation, which need to be adapted to specific surgical sites for optimal cell migration and stability. Scaffolds for areas exposed to high forces should be printed with smaller pores, while those for sites not exposed to high forces should have larger pores.
