Contributions of supercritical fluid technology for advancing decellularization and postprocessing of viable biological materials

Marta M. Duarte et al.

Summary: The demand for tissue and organ transplantation has led to increased interest in developing new therapies such as decellularization. However, this process can be harsh, prompting research into supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) assisted decellularization which offers a more benign alternative. This method has shown promising results in preserving the biochemical and mechanical properties of sensitive materials.

Isolation of multipotent progenitor cells from pleura and pericardium for tracheal tissue engineering purposes

Rayna de Wit et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the feasibility of isolating progenitor cells with stem cell features from pericardium and pleura, showing multipotency and capability to differentiate towards chondrogenic, osteogenic and adipogenic lineages. Despite subtle differences, based on gene expression, pericardium- and pleura-derived stem cells may offer a superior autologous cell source for tracheal tissue engineering.

Interindividual heterogeneity affects the outcome of human cardiac tissue decellularization

Miguel F. Tenreiro et al.

Summary: Engineered human cardiac tissues rely on ECM for tissue assembly, with decellularized ECM from human cardiac tissue showing potential improvements. However, standardization of decellularization protocols for human tissue is challenging, with a need to balance between cell removal efficiency and ECM preservation based on intended application of the scaffold. Despite variations in results, decellularized human cardiac ECM has shown promise in supporting cardiomyocyte attachment and alignment, suggesting its potential in cardiac tissue engineering.
