Engineered Macrophages: A Safe-by-Design Approach for the Tumor Targeting Delivery of Sub-5 nm Gold Nanoparticles

Lining Xu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on using macrophages as a shuttle to deliver sub-5 nm PEGylated gold nanoparticles to tumors, while reducing the accumulation of nanoparticles in the brain. The study demonstrates that sub-5 nm gold nanoparticles can be rapidly exocytosed from live macrophages, leading to the release of free nanoparticles in the blood circulation. To overcome this issue, the researchers engineer macrophages to obtain half-dead and dead macrophages. Although the efficiency of engineered macrophages for delivering nanoparticles to tumors is slightly lower than that of free nanoparticles, this approach can significantly reduce the accumulation of nanoparticles in the brain.

Palladium nanoplates scotch breast cancer lung metastasis by constraining epithelial-mesenchymal transition

Shunhao Wang et al.

Summary: Palladium nanoplates inhibit lung metastasis by suppressing EMT signaling in breast cancer cells and interacting with TGF-beta proteins, leading to reduced downstream signaling activation. NIR irradiation enhances the inhibitory effects of PdPL on both primary tumors and metastasis.

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells in cancer therapy

Tianxia Lan et al.

Summary: Multipotent mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) have been identified in almost all tissues of the human body, showing potential in cancer treatment due to their multipotency, immunomodulation capacity, and tumor-homing property. However, controversial roles of MSCs in crosstalk with tumors hinder translational medicine progress.

Persistency of Mesenchymal Stromal/Stem Cells in Lungs

Erica Ferrini et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) have high regenerative potential and can guide tissue regeneration through their distribution in the lungs, with a longer persistence than previously observed. In vivo tracking techniques allow for the detection and monitoring of MSC clones in the body, potentially impacting pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of MSCs as a therapeutic tool.

Hyperspectral-enhanced dark field analysis of individual and collective photo-responsive gold-copper sulfide nanoparticles

Paula Zamora-Perez et al.

Summary: The study utilized hyperspectral-enhanced dark field microscopy to investigate physicochemical changes in biomaterials by tracking unique spectral signatures in different biological environments, particularly in nanoparticles. The findings highlighted the impact of environmental factors on the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles and emphasized the need for fresh preparation before application for optimal performance.
