Electroporation-coupled electrochemical oxidation for rapid and efficient water disinfection with Co3O4 nanowire arrays-modified graphite felt electrodes

Shuang-Yu Pi et al.

Summary: In this study, a flow-through electrode system (FES) was constructed using Co3O4 nanowire electrodes, which achieved rapid and efficient water disinfection. The disinfection mechanisms were found to be electroporation and electrochemical oxidation on the Co3O4 nanowire anode. The FES showed good removal efficiency for various bacterial species.

Electrochemical flow-through disinfection reduces antibiotic resistance genes and horizontal transfer risk across bacterial species

Cong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of ARB disinfection on the risk of HGT, with an electrochemical flow-through reactor (EFTR) being used to inactivate E. coli and remove ARGs. Results show that EFTR effectively reduces ARGs concentration and decreases HGT frequency, making it a promising technology for preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance.

Microbial contamination in drinking water at public outdoor recreation facilities in New Zealand

B. J. Phiri et al.

Summary: The study in New Zealand assessed the presence of waterborne pathogens in outdoor facilities' drinking water and tracked potential sources of microbial contamination. Results showed that untreated or filter-only treated water in public campgrounds did not comply with national standards, highlighting the need for additional water treatment methods like UV irradiation or chemical treatment.

Tip-Enhanced Electric Field: A New Mechanism Promoting Mass Transfer in Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, NiFe alloy nanocone arrays were used to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rate and outperform state-of-the-art OER electrocatalysts. The high-curvature tips on the nanocones induce a local electric field that significantly increases the concentration of hydroxide ions near the active sites, promoting OER activity. This local field enhanced OER kinetics is suggested to be a generic effect applicable to other OER catalysts.

Removal of antibiotic-resistant genes during drinking water treatment: A review

Tuqiao Zhang et al.

Summary: The contamination of drinking water by ARGs poses a serious risk to human health, and proper treatment processes are essential for managing this risk. DWTPs are generally effective in removing ARGs, but certain biological processes may actually promote antibiotic resistance. Disinfection and membrane filtration are superior methods for ARGs removal, and future studies should focus on controlling ARGs transmissibility and persistence through DWTPs.
