Permeability and selectivity analysis for affinity-based nanoparticle separation through nanochannels

Hongping Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the separation of nanoparticles with different surface affinities in nanochannels using dynamical density functional theory. The research reveals that a proper design of the channel inner-surface can enhance the permeability and selectivity of particles. The study also proposes a model relating permeability to the equilibrium partition coefficient, which accurately predicts the transport of charged particles.

Improving the osmotic energy conversion efficiency of multiple nanopores by a cross flow

Hung-Yu Lo et al.

Summary: Applying a cross flow parallel to the pore openings can lower the degree of ionic concentration polarization (ICP) and improve the osmotic power generation performance of charged nanopores. The best performance is achieved by applying the cross flow on the lower salt concentration side, and the osmotic power generated increases with the increased cross flow velocity.

Combined Effects of Zeta-potential and Temperature of Nanopores on Diffusioosmotic Ion Transport

Jongwan Lee et al.

Summary: This study utilized a self-assembled particle membrane-integrated microfluidic platform to successfully modulate the material properties of nanopores and quantify the effect of zeta-potential on diffusioosmosis. The experimental results demonstrated a nonlinear relationship between DO-driven ion transport and the ionic strength of the electrolytes, with the latter governing the effectiveness of ion transport in diffusioosmosis or diffusion phenomena.

Competition between electroosmotic and chemiosmotic flow in charged nanofluidics

Sourayon Chanda et al.

Summary: In this study, diffusion osmotic nanoflow in charged nanochannels under different salt concentrations was investigated. The flow speed was found to be linearly dependent on the concentration difference, while the flow direction was primarily influenced by the nanochannel dimensions and surface charge density.

Stable Ti3C2Tx MXene-Boron Nitride Membranes with Low Internal Resistance for Enhanced Salinity Gradient Energy Harvesting

Guoliang Yang et al.

Summary: A study reported a two-dimensional layered nanochannel with excellent stability and reduced internal resistance for enhanced salinity gradient energy harvesting. By adding BN nanosheets, the internal resistance of the MXBN membrane was significantly reduced, resulting in an increased output power density. Furthermore, the membrane exhibited excellent structural stability in long-term aqueous conditions.

Thermo-osmotic transport in nanochannels grafted with pH-responsive polyelectrolyte brushes modelled using augmented strong stretching theory

Vishal Sankar Sivasankar et al.

Summary: This paper develops a theory to demonstrate the significant enhancement of liquid transport in nanochannels with charged polyelectrolyte brushes due to thermo-osmotic effects induced by an axial temperature gradient. The induced electric field and TOS flow field are quantified, with different components of the electric field and contributions of different ions also being measured. The TOS velocity is expressed as a combination of chemiosmotic, thermal, and electro-osmotic components, with the presence of polyelectrolyte brushes leading to a massive augmentation in liquid transport compared to brush-free nanochannels.

Influence of the Exclusion-Enrichment Effect on Ion Transport in Two-Dimensional Molybdenum Disulfide Membranes

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, ion transport inside a 2D MoS2 membrane was investigated by combining experimental results with numerical modeling. The influence of the electrical double layer (EDL) extension on ion diffusion and the role of the exclusion-enrichment coefficient (beta) were analyzed. The results showed that coion diffusion inside the membrane can be retarded, and convective mass transport can weaken the exclusion-enrichment effect.
