Perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with internal electric fields and anisotropic charge migration for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yan Guo et al.

Summary: This study synthesized perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 1.5 nm and demonstrated their activity as highly efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. The introduction of carboxyl groups increased the internal electric fields, promoting charge-carrier separation, and weakened charge-carrier recombination by migrating photogenerated electrons and holes to the edge and plane, respectively. Furthermore, the reduction potential and hydrophilic sites of perylenetetracarboxylic acid were enhanced. This work provides a strategy for designing future efficient photocatalysts.

Summary: The study successfully fabricated PTEtOH/g-C3N4 nanosheet heterojunctions with suitable energy levels to promote carrier separation and improve photocatalytic performance. Enhanced performance was attributed to promoted carrier transfer and separation in the synthesized heterojunction with strengthened interface contacts via hydrogen bonding. Additionally, the photocatalytic performance was further improved by synthesizing N-PTEtOH with lowered energy levels and constructing N-PTEtOH/g-C3N4 nanosheet heterojunction, exhibiting a significant enhancement in comparison with g-C3N4.

On-Surface Polymerization of In-Plane Highly Ordered Carbon Nitride Nanosheets toward Photocatalytic Mineralization of Mercaptan Gas

Fangsong Guo et al.

Summary: 2D carbon nitride nanosheets with in-plane highly ordered structure (PCNNs-IHO) are successfully prepared by on-surface polymerization of melamine on NaCl crystal surface at elevated temperatures. The NaCl crystals with relative high surface energy facilitate the adsorption and activation of melamine to undergo condensation reaction, and also function as unique substrates to orientate the assembly of 2D nanosheet structure. NaCl acts as a reactant to provide Na+ doping into carbon nitride matrix, affording PCNNs-IHO with robust structural base sites. PCNNs-IHO exhibits superior photocatalytic performance toward CH3SH mineralization under visible light irradiation.

Summary: A universal strategy was developed to construct a cascade Z-Scheme system using an effective energy platform as the core to direct charge transfer and separation. The experimental results and DFT calculations based on van der Waals structural models revealed that the introduced platform prolonged the lifetimes of spatially separated electrons and holes without compromising their reduction and oxidation potentials. The optimized cascade Z-Scheme showed significant improvement in photoactivity for CO2 reduction to CO under visible-light irradiation, surpassing other reported Z-Scheme systems even with noble metals as mediators.
