Two electrolyte decomposition pathways at nickel-rich cathode surfaces in lithium-ion batteries

Bernardine L. D. Rinkel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of electrolyte decomposition in lithium-ion batteries. The results indicate that the electrolyte decomposition on NMC electrodes can proceed through two distinct routes with different onset potentials. The consumption of water at the negative electrode can effectively reduce the decomposition products, thereby mitigating the degradation of NMC/graphite cells.

Coordination interaction boosts energy storage in rechargeable Al battery with a positive electrode material of CuSe

Gangyong Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a coordination adsorption strategy was employed using CuSe as a positive electrode material to enhance cycling stability and rate capability. Ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed reversible redox reactions of Cu and Se species, while electron microscopy measurements showed capacity deterioration due to the dissolution of active Cu and Se species. Theoretical calculations identified strong coordination interaction between nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide and active species as key in suppressing shuttle effects and achieving excellent cycling stability.

Role of Electrolyte Oxidation and Difluorophosphoric Acid Generation in Crossover and Capacity Fade in Lithium Ion Batteries

Chamithri Jayawardana et al.

Summary: This investigation reveals that in high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, damage to the anode solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is mainly caused by the oxidative decomposition of LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate-based carbonate electrolytes, generating acidic species. These acidic species cross over to the anode, degrading the anode SEI components and resulting in capacity loss of the cells.

Long-life LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/graphite lithium-ion cells with an artificial graphite-electrolyte interface

Feng Zou et al.

Summary: The high operating voltage of LNMO cathode in lithium-ion cells leads to electrolyte decomposition and accelerated deterioration of the electrode/electrolyte interface. Aggressive side reactions at the graphite anode cause massive active lithium loss and capacity fade. By coating the graphite surface with an ultra-thin Al2O3 film, undesired reactions are inhibited, drastically improving the capacity and cycling stability of the LNMO/graphite cell.
