Ultralong Lifespan for High-Voltage LiCoO2 Enabled by In Situ Reconstruction of an Atomic Layer Deposition Coating Layer

Rui Wu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study on surface reconstruction of lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) using atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. An ultrathin Al2O3 layer is initially coated on the LCO surface, but it undergoes reconstruction after reacting with electrolyte decomposition products during cycling. The in situ formed Li3AlF6 layer shows better binding to the LCO surface, as well as good Li+ conductivity and electrochemical stability. The ALD technology allows for ultrathin and conformal coating, which benefits electronic conductivity and cycling stability.

Elucidating the Role of Rational Separator Microstructures in Guiding Dendrite Growth and Reviving Dead Li

Li Ting Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of tuning the microstructure of a porous separator on the growth of lithium dendrites and the revival of dead lithium were investigated using a mechano-electrochemical phase-field model. By rationally designing the porous separator, the growth of lithium dendrites can be guided towards dense deposition. In addition, the revival of dead lithium was observed after it made contact with lithium metal.
