Multi-stable cholesteric liquid crystal windows with four optical states

Liyi Mo et al.

Summary: An electrically switchable multi-stable liquid crystal device is demonstrated based on a non-uniform cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) structure in a single cell, which can be switched to four different states. All states with reflecting and/or scattering properties remain stable for an extended period of time after switching off the electric field. Thanks to its multi-stability, this device can be used for energy-saving smart windows of automobiles, buildings and in architectural aesthetics.

Photonic Cholesteric Liquid-Crystal Elastomers with Reprogrammable Helical Pitch and Handedness

Saddam Hussain et al.

Summary: The unique combination of photonic helicoidal structure and rubber-like properties in cholesteric liquid-crystal elastomers results in a highly stretchable mechanochromic film capable of reflecting both right- and left-handed circular polarized light. The patterned photonic CLCE film, controlled by applied strain, can encrypt data and camouflage itself under unpolarized daylight. These elastomers have potential applications in sensors, robotics, displays, encryption, and anti-counterfeiting due to their mechanochromic capabilities.
