Nanoindentation to Determine Young's Modulus for Thermoplastic Polymers

Ahcene Mokhtari et al.

Summary: A simple method for measuring the Young's modulus of thermoplastic polymers at the nanoscale is proposed through nanoindentation tests. The method minimizes errors by calculating stiffness at different loads and obtains an elastic modulus that is in very good agreement with tensile test results.

From bottle to microplastics: Can we estimate how our plastic products are breaking down?

Joana Marie Sipe et al.

Summary: Microplastics have become a growing concern due to the exponential growth of plastics. This study developed a method to quantitatively release scalable microplastics through abrasion and identified the abrasion rates of different polymers. The research contributes to understanding the generation rates of microplastics and provides data for reducing water pollution.

Comprehensive investigation of the viscoelastic properties of PMMA by nanoindentation

Petra Christoefl et al.

Summary: Instrumented nanoindentation was utilized to examine the viscoelastic properties of PMMA as an amorphous polymer model. Evaluation methods combining adhesive contact and empiric models were applied to determine the elastic moduli, and comparison with AFM-NI and compression tests were conducted. The results showed good agreement between NI and AFM-NI, with only slightly lower values obtained with the O&P based AFM-NI method.

Real-time ageing of polyesters with varying diols

Emil Andersen et al.

Summary: Polyesters are widely used for their excellent properties, but are not usually used for durable goods. This study exposed four different polyesters to real-time conditions, showing that they become increasingly brittle with aging, with PCTT displaying the highest resistance to aging-induced embrittlement.

A Critical Review on the Impacts of Nanoplastics and Microplastics on Aquatic and Terrestrial Photosynthetic Organisms

Camille Larue et al.

Summary: Microplastic and nanoplastic contamination is widespread and has significant impacts on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems due to their toxicity towards photosynthetic organisms and potential risks for plants and consumers. Accumulation of plastic leachates and additives poses a risk for plants and consumers, and the adsorption and translocation of these particles raise concerns for trophic chain contamination. Available techniques for detection of microplastics and nanoplastics in biological samples and media are listed, along with discussions on current gaps in knowledge and future research directions.
