Chlorophyll fluorescence as a valuable multitool for microalgal biotechnology

Alexei Solovchenko et al.

Summary: Variable fluorescence of chlorophyll (CF) provides valuable information on the physiological condition of photosynthetic organisms and is increasingly used for characterization of microalgae performance and stress resilience in biotechnology. CF analysis reveals the fate of light energy absorbed by the photosynthetic apparatus and serves as an accurate proxy for the metabolic activity and photoprotective mechanisms of the photosynthetic cell. CF-based techniques have applications in the assessment of culture conditions, monitoring stressor effects, and evaluating the impact of toxicants in microalgae.

Phytochrome A in plants comprises two structurally and functionally distinct populations - water-soluble phyA' and amphiphilic phyA

V. Sineshchekov et al.

Summary: Photoreceptor phytochrome A plays a key role in the development and evolution of higher plants. It acts in different modes and is active in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. The existence of different structural types of phyA in the cell contributes to its complex actions. PhyA is responsible for regulating seed germination, while phyA' mediates a specific growth response in seedlings. PhyA in the cytoplasm is likely involved in cytoplasmic photoregulatory events. Additionally, there may be functional interaction between phyA and the defense-related hormone jasmonic acid.

Cooperative pathway of O2 reduction to H2O2 in chloroplast thylakoid membrane: new insight into the Mehler reaction

Boris Ivanov et al.

Summary: Oxygen reduction in chloroplasts can produce hydrogen peroxide. It was previously believed that the formation of hydrogen peroxide was a result of disproportionation of superoxide radicals in the chloroplast stroma, but it has now been discovered that there is another pathway in the thylakoid membrane, where superoxide radicals react with reduced plastoquinone molecules to produce hydrogen peroxide. This pathway of hydrogen peroxide production is important for redox signaling and scavenging of reactive oxygen species.

Measurements of the light-induced steady state electric potential generation by photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes

Mahir D. Mamedov et al.

Summary: This minireview discusses the methods for measuring the light-induced steady state transmembrane electric potential (ΔΨ) generation in photosynthetic systems, focusing on photosystem I (PS I). The microelectrode technique and the detection of electrochromic bandshifts of carotenoid pigments are suitable for in situ and in vivo ΔΨ measurements. Direct electrometrical methods and measurement of ΔΨ in photovoltaic systems based on membrane filters (MF) are appropriate for studying pigment-protein complexes and natural vesicles-chromatophores. It was found that the ITO|PS I-MF|ITO system, in the presence of trehalose, can maintain a steady state level of ΔΨ increment after prolonged storage.

Photobiology of lipofuscin granules in the retinal pigment epithelium cells of the eye: norm, pathology, age

T. B. Feldman et al.

Summary: Lipofuscin granules (LGs) accumulate in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells and can cause pathology and accelerate aging. The review examines the composition, spectral properties, and photoactivity of LGs. Studies show that the fluorescent characteristics of LGs change in pathology and after exposure to ionizing radiation. Improved methods of early diagnosis of degenerative diseases can be developed by analyzing the fluorescence spectra and kinetics of oxidized products of LG fluorophores.
