Summary: The Chinese government aims to propose an alternative to the existing US-led international order that is more aligned with China's interests. The Chinese International Relations community is developing indigenous theories that reflect Chinese characteristics in order to establish a conceptual basis for this alternative order. However, whether China can exercise normative power in international relations depends on the recognition of its alternative discourses by other actors.
