Ecological Civilisation Discourse in Xinhua's African Newswires: Towards a Greener Agency?

Robert Boughen

Summary: Chinese central media's portrayal of Africa through environmental news has shifted from a reactive charm defensive to promoting the developmental model of Ecological Civilisation. The presence of risk discourses in some reports suggests a potential alteration in hegemonic discourse, possibly influenced by Xinhua's commercial objectives in Africa or the subjectivities of individual Xinhua journalists. This research makes significant contributions to understanding Chinese soft power in Africa, the ecology of Chinese media in Africa, and the development of environmental discourses.

Biodiversity and the challenge of pluralism

Unai Pascual et al.

Summary: The lack of progress in reversing the declining global trend in biodiversity is partly due to a mismatch in how living nature is conceived and valued, leading to hindrances in protecting biodiversity. Addressing this problem calls for a pluralistic perspective on biodiversity, considering the use of the concept, willingness to expand its ambit, and engagement with various drivers of change.
