The birth of intelligent passive room acoustic technology: a qualitative review

Megan Burfoot et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the concept of Intelligent Passive Room Acoustic Technology (IPRAT), which achieves real-time room acoustic optimization through the integration of Passive Variable Acoustic Technology (PVAT) and Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC). The study highlights the importance of designing dynamic spaces with varying reverberation times (RTs) and fills the gap in intelligently adjusting RTs according to changing building function.

A method for determining the weight of objective indoor environment and subjective response based on information theory

Zhongchen Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method to quickly calculate the weights of objective and subjective parameters in multi-objective optimization of building environment control based on information gain ratio. A case study on two office buildings in Shanghai demonstrated that thermal satisfaction and light satisfaction have the greatest impact on overall satisfaction. The weight calculation results differed between satisfied and unsatisfied conditions, highlighting the importance of comprehensive consideration in engineering applications.

Acoustical parameters for learning in classroom: A review

Greta Minelli et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the reference values of acoustical parameters that have the greatest influence on students' performance at different ages. Published studies from 2002 to 2020 were summarized, focusing on learning attainments and cognitive skills, speech intelligibility, and subjective perceptions under different classroom acoustic conditions. The findings from 38 selected papers were used to develop classroom acoustic guidelines for better learning performance for students under or over 12 years of age and identified the thresholds that lead to worse performances.

Underlying indicators for measuring smartness of buildings in the construction industry

Frank Ato Ghansah et al.

Summary: This study investigates potential indicators for measuring the smartness of buildings and proposes a blueprint guidance model to improve building performance and inform policymakers. The research findings reveal that the Ghanaian construction industry has a relatively high level of knowledge about smart building indicators, but further research is needed to assess the awareness level of smart building technologies and identify adoption barriers.

Sociodemographic variations in the association between indoor environmental quality in school buildings and student performance

Wande Benka-Coker et al.

Summary: Our study suggests that improving indoor environmental quality in schools could help mitigate the negative impact on academic achievement among students facing social and economic risks. For example, for Latinx students, a higher Operation Report Card score was associated with an increase in math test scores at the 90th percentile, while for White students, it was associated with a decrease.

Examining critical perspectives on Building Information Modelling (BIM) adoption in New Zealand

Dat Tien Doan et al.

Summary: This research aims to explore the perspectives of key actors in the New Zealand construction industry towards BIM adoption. The study found that there is a need for a unique definition of BIM in New Zealand to achieve clear understanding among construction practitioners. Most construction practitioners in New Zealand are not well aware of BIM, and potential benefits and barriers to BIM adoption were identified.
