Glacier-glacial lake changes and modeling glacial lake outburst flood in Upper Ganga Basin, India

Manish Rawat et al.

Summary: Glaciers in the Himalayan region are retreating and forming glacial lakes, which pose a threat to property, infrastructure, and lives in low-lying areas. This study analyzes the changes in glaciers and glacial lakes in the Upper Ganga Basin over a span of 24 years using satellite data, and evaluates the potential flood impacts of a dangerous unnamed lake. The results indicate shrinking glacier area and increasing number and size of glacial lakes. The study recommends limiting development along flood channels and in ecologically fragile areas.

Glacier surging controls glacier lake formation and outburst floods: The example of the Khurdopin Glacier, Karakoram

Nazir Ahmed Bazai et al.

Summary: This study investigates ice dammed glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) associated with surge glaciers, focusing on the Khurdopin Glacier in the Karakoram region. The research analyzes seven surge periodical cycles and three surge events using satellite imagery, identifying the importance of surge velocities in controlling conduit development and subsequent GLOFs. A subglacial drainage model was developed to estimate peak discharge timing in GLOF hydrographs, highlighting the dominance of conduit melt enlargement as a drainage process. The study's results suggest that the proposed model could be widely applied for surge-type glaciers worldwide to anticipate ice-dammed lake formation and GLOFs, allowing for timely precautionary measures and reducing downstream damage.

Mapping of groundwater potential zones in Pohru Watershed of Jhelum Basin-Western Himalaya, India using integrated approach of remote sensing, GIS and AHP

Abid Farooq Rather et al.

Summary: This study focuses on delineating the groundwater potential zones in the Pohru Watershed, India by integrating Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information System (GIS), and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The findings identified five major groundwater potential zones, with high potential concentrated in alluvial plains and low potential in dissected hills and mountain ridges. The accuracy of the prediction for groundwater recharge zones in the study region was found to be moderate to high. The study validates the location and water depth of groundwater wells in relation to the mapped potential zones.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of CMIP6 GCMs over South America and finds that they capture the main climate characteristics well, but exhibit varying skill in the spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation and temperature. Future projections suggest decreasing precipitation in some areas and increasing temperatures overall. Results indicate a more intense hydrological cycle as greenhouse gas emissions increase over time.

Increased outburst flood hazard from Lake Palcacocha due to human-induced glacier retreat

R. F. Stuart-Smith et al.

Summary: The retreat of Palcaraju glacier and expansion of Palcacocha lake are mainly attributed to human-induced global warming, which has significantly increased the glacial lake outburst flood hazard in Huaraz. Observations suggest that between 85-105% of the observed 1 degrees Celsius warming since 1880 in this region is due to anthropogenic factors, impacting the glacier retreat and flood risk.

The 2020 glacial lake outburst flood process chain at Lake Salkantaycocha (Cordillera Vilcabamba, Peru)

Oscar Vilca et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a landslide-triggered glacial lake outburst flood process that occurred in the Peruvian Andes on February 23, 2020. The initial slide evolved into a rock/ice avalanche, impacting a moraine-dammed lake and triggering a displacement wave which eroded the dam, resulting in a far-reaching flood causing fatalities downstream. The study reveals the dynamics of the event through field investigations, remotely sensed data, meteorological data, and computer simulations, contributing to the understanding of such events in changing high-mountain regions.

Summary: This article delves into the overlooked aspect of glacier melt, focusing on how competing narratives are embedded in climate change adaptation debates. Analyzing regional narratives, it reveals the contested role of glacial meltwater among local residents, shaping the perception of glaciers as not just physical features but also influential nodes of discourse. By studying the case of Peru's Cordillera Blanca, the article highlights the power dynamics that lead to differing views on glacial lake risk management and emphasizes the importance of narrative analysis in understanding local experiences with glacier change and climate adaptation.

Contemporary glacial lakes in the Peruvian Andes

J. L. Wood et al.

Summary: Glacier recession due to climate warming has led to the growth in size and number of glacial lakes, impacting water resources and glacier mass balance, as well as posing risks of glacial lake outburst floods. By creating a comprehensive inventory of glacial lakes in Peru, this study addresses knowledge gaps and provides reproducible methods for consistent monitoring in other mountainous regions. The inventory reveals that the majority of glacial lakes are detached from glaciers, with different dam types affecting lake size variations. This inventory serves as a crucial first step in understanding glacial lakes and assessing risks associated with glacial lake outburst floods.

Glacial change and hydrological implications in the Himalaya and Karakoram

Yong Nie et al.

Summary: Glaciers in the Himalaya-Karakoram mountain ranges provide freshwater and hydropower to millions of people, but they are melting at unsustainably high rates. Recent decades have seen accelerated mass loss in Himalayan glaciers, contrasting with relatively stable Karakoram glaciers. Under various climate change scenarios, glacier meltwater run-off in the two mountain ranges is expected to peak in the next few decades, followed by a decline as the glaciers shrink.
