Satellite-derived vegetation temperature condition index to infer root zone soil moisture in semi-arid province of Rajasthan, India

N. R. Patel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the utility of Vegetation Temperature Condition Index (VTCI) in estimating soil moisture status in Rajasthan province. The results show that VTCI at 1-km resolution is a more accurate representation of soil moisture conditions and exhibits a strong correlation with in-situ volumetric soil moisture in the eastern Rajasthan crop areas. Therefore, VTCI is suggested to be useful for agricultural drought assessment in semi-arid areas.

Agricultural drought survey using MODIS-based image indices at the regional scale: case study of the Urmia Lake Basin, Iran

Nazila Shamloo et al.

Summary: This paper studies regional drought in the Urmia Lake Basin in northwestern Iran from an agricultural perspective. Different vegetation indices and satellite data are used to analyze the drought conditions. The results show that the basin has experienced mild and moderate drought in recent years, leading to a decline in the lake's water level.

A phenological object-based approach for rice crop classification using time-series Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data in Taiwan

Nguyen-Thanh Son et al.

Summary: This study utilized Sentinel-1 SAR data to develop an object-based approach for mapping rice fields, which proved to be accurate and practical through image classification and accuracy assessment. The results of this study suggest that this method could be applied on a larger scale and can be used to update rice crop maps efficiently.

Monitoring of agricultural drought in semi-arid ecosystem of Peninsular India through indices derived from time-series CHIRPS and MODIS datasets

P. Sandeep et al.

Summary: Reliable remote sensing-based drought indices are essential for accurately mapping and monitoring agricultural drought, as demonstrated in the study of agricultural drought dynamics in the Rayalaseema region of Peninsular India. The NVSWI, derived from NDVI and LST, proved to be a robust index for assessing and monitoring agricultural droughts, with correlations observed between NVSWI, SPI, and VHI in different growing seasons. High temperatures and below-average rainfall were identified as the primary factors contributing to drought occurrence in the region, with extreme dry conditions observed during dry years.

Agricultural Drought Detection with MODIS Based Vegetation Health Indices in Southeast Germany

Simon Kloos et al.

Summary: Droughts during the growing season in Central Europe are projected to increase, making area-wide monitoring of agricultural drought crucial. Research has shown that water is the primary limiting factor for vegetation growth in specific areas and during summer months, with temperature and vegetation health indices correlating with soil moisture and agricultural yield anomalies.

Contrasting influence of human activities on agricultural and hydrological droughts in India

Deep Shah et al.

Summary: The study found that human activities have different effects on agricultural and hydrological droughts in India. While human activities reduced the intensity of agricultural droughts, they intensified hydrological droughts. Excessive groundwater pumping and irrigation may exacerbate hydrological droughts, leading to significant environmental implications.
