Does cognitive impairment precede self-reported poor hearing? Results from the English longitudinal study of ageing

Felipe Eduardo Valsechi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether cognitive impairment precedes self-reported poor hearing over a 14-year period. The study found that individuals with cognitive impairment had a 33% increased odds of self-reported poor hearing. These findings provide important insights for improving the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive and hearing impairment.

A Newly Identified Impairment in Both Vision and Hearing Increases the Risk of Deterioration in Both Communication and Cognitive Performance

Dawn M. Guthrie et al.

Summary: The study found that new vision and hearing impairments lead to a deterioration in receptive communication and cognitive performance, impacting the health-related outcomes of clients. After multivariate adjustment, individuals with new vision and hearing impairments had twice the odds of cognitive performance deterioration compared to those without sensory impairments.

Causes of blindness and vision impairment in 2020 and trends over 30 years, and prevalence of avoidable blindness in relation to VISION 2020: the Right to Sight: an analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study

Jaimie D. Steinmetz et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally from 1990 to 2020, finding that there was no change in the global prevalence of avoidable blindness and vision impairment in adults aged 50 and older. Although the age-standardized prevalence of avoidable blindness decreased, avoidable moderate and severe vision impairment did not change.

Self-report Measures of Hearing and Vision in Older Adults Participating in the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging are Explained by Behavioral Sensory Measures, Demographic, and Social Factors

Anni Hamalainen et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of impairments based on behavioral measures was higher than the prevalence of difficulties based on self-report measures, and both increased with age. Self-reported sensory difficulty was associated with sensory and nonsensory factors, with age, gender, and comorbidities being the most notable predictors for self-reported hearing and vision.

Taste Sensitivity of Elderly People Is Associated with Quality of Life and Inadequate Dietary Intake

Soyeon Jeon et al.

Summary: Taste sensitivity may decrease with age, influenced by insufficient dietary intake, especially iron and thiamin. Taste recognition thresholds are strongly associated with quality of life (QOL) in the elderly, but show partial relationships with physical activity, number of medicine intakes, social gatherings, and education.
