The impact of eco-environmental regulation on green energy efficiency in China-Based on spatial economic analysis

Mingran Wu

Summary: This study examines the impact of China's investment in energy technology on economic growth and the environment. The findings suggest that while China's green energy efficiency has improved from 2010 to 2019, overall performance is still lacking. It is also observed that the efficiency value is closely related to economic development and exhibits spatial phenomena. The study highlights the need for further development of energy-saving technologies and the establishment of reasonable environmental regulation policies to promote cleaner production and rational distribution of the energy industry.

The impact of environmental accountability on air pollution: A public attention perspective

Xing Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed air pollution data from 321 cities in China and Baidu Index data and found that public attention has a positive impact in reducing air pollution. Particularly in large cities, first-tier cities, ministerial cities, and cities with severe air pollution, public attention has a stronger suppressing effect on air pollution. By making complaints to the government and showing concern for health issues, public attention can effectively reduce air pollution.

Does government subsidy stimulate or shackle new energy industry efficiency? Evidence from China

Shuai Lu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the development of China's new energy industry from 2013 to 2017 and the effect of government subsidies. Through analyzing data from listed companies, the study finds that the industry's efficiency initially increased but then noticeably declined. The government subsidies had a positive impact on the industry, but they also had a limiting effect after reaching a certain threshold. Additionally, cash flow and R&D investments were found to have a positive mediating effect on industry efficiency, while management self-interest had a negative mediating effect.

The average environmental efficiency technique and its application to Chinese provincial panel data

Jing Tang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an average environmental efficiency measurement to evaluate the environmental efficiency of Chinese provinces. The results show that most provinces have room for improvement and the eastern region has the best environmental efficiency. Factors such as energy consumption structure, government intervention, and economic openness have a negative impact on regional environmental efficiency.

Does public participation promote environmental efficiency? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment of environmental information disclosure in China

Hua Zhang et al.

Summary: Previous literature on improving environmental efficiency has focused on the role of the government and neglected the contribution of public participation represented by environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs). This paper evaluates the effectiveness of public participation using a quasi-natural experiment generated by the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE) in China. The empirical results show that environmental efficiency in cities with environmental information disclosure improves by 21.11% compared to cities without such disclosure. However, this improvement diminishes in the long-term. The study also demonstrates that controlling pollutant emissions is the main mechanism for enhancing environmental efficiency. Moreover, the effects of public participation are more prominent in eastern, developed, large, and non-resource-based cities. These findings highlight the importance of public participation in green development and provide empirical evidence for a diversified environmental governance system.

Environmental Efficiency Evaluation of China's Power Industry Based on the Two-Stage Network Slack-Based Measure Model

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the overall environmental efficiency of China's 30 provinces is low, with large regional differences, but there is a gradual improvement trend towards a better direction since 2015. Power generation efficiency is generally higher than transmission and distribution efficiency, and the latter is a significant factor contributing to the overall low environmental efficiency.

Summary: The study finds that both marketization and environmental regulations significantly promote green productivity, but these effects weakened from the tenth to twelfth Five-Year Plans. Different ownership types of enterprises have varying effects from regulations and marketization, while regionally, central China shows the strongest association between green TFP growth and marketization and regulations.

The Political Economy of Market-based and Information-based Environmental Policies

Jason M. Walter

Summary: Contemporary research indicates that consumers are willing to pay a premium for eco-friendly products, suggesting that eco-labels and other information-based policies could be an alternative to market-based policy tools. A comparison between emission taxes and eco-labels reveals a carrot versus stick approach to environmental policy, with both approaches yielding environmental benefits. However, the political nature of environmental policy may prevent the implementation of the socially-optimal environmental policy.

Market-based environmental regulation and total factor productivity: Evidence from Chinese enterprises*

Jiaying Peng et al.

Summary: This study uses China's recent SO2 Emissions Trading Pilot as an experiment to identify the productivity effects of market-based environmental regulation on Chinese industrial enterprises. The results suggest that the regulation has significant productivity-enhancing effects, especially for privately owned, more productive, and less pollution-intensive enterprises. Additionally, there is a dynamic productivity-enhancing effect that tends to decay slowly over time.

Can pollution charges reform promote industrial SO2 emissions reduction?-Evidence from 189 China's cities

Da Gao et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the real effects of pollution charges reform on SO2 emissions at the city level, showing that increasing pollution charges has a significant and positive effect on controlling industrial waste SO2. By forcing companies to strengthen production controls and end-of-pipe treatment, reductions in SO2 emissions can be achieved to meet targets, with eastern and western cities demonstrating better pollution control effects.
