Watershed prioritization for soil erosion mapping in the Lesser Himalayan Indian basin using PCA and WSA methods in conjunction with morphometric parameters and GIS-based approach

Atul Kumar et al.

Summary: The subtropical Himalayan basins are highly susceptible to land degradation, especially due to deforestation, landslides, intensive agriculture, population pressure, and overgrazing, where erosion processes occur. By using watershed prioritization methods, the study found that the outlet watersheds have high priority while the sub-watersheds in the north-eastern part have the lowest priority. Length of overland flow, relative relief, basin relief ratio, and hypsometric integral were identified as the most important indicators of soil erosion in the Kalsa River watershed.

Land evaluation and sustainable development of ecotourism in the Garhwal Himalayan region using geospatial technology and analytical hierarchy process

Shairy Chaudhary et al.

Summary: The study identifies potential ecotourism sites in the Garhwal Himalayan region using GIS-RS techniques, helping tourism planners and governments select locations precisely and develop ecotourism activities. The results have implications for sustainable tourism efforts and can contribute to the employment generation and profits for local communities, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal-15 (SDG-15).

Soil erosion assessment using earth observation data in a trans-boundary river basin

Nirmal Kumar et al.

Summary: Soil erosion rate in Ghaghara river basin was estimated using different digital elevation models (DEMs), with RUSLE showing rates varying from 4.35 to 21.39 ton/ha/year. Water holding capacity varied between clay_loam soil and glacier areas. Hypsometry analysis indicated sub-basins transitioning from young to mature due to erosion, with prioritized conservation measures needed in upper and middle basin areas.
