Impact of prior vaccination with Covishield™ and Covaxin® on mortality among symptomatic COVID-19 patients during the second wave of the pandemic in South India during April and May 2021: a cohort study

Kundavaram Paul Prabhakar Abhilash et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of CovishieldTM and Covaxin(R) vaccines on the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients during the second wave of the pandemic in India. The results showed that vaccination reduced the risk of mortality, hospitalization, oxygen therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and ICU admission. Full vaccination provided better protection.

Risk factors and disease profile of post-vaccination SARS-CoV-2 infection in UK users of the COVID Symptom Study app: a prospective, community-based, nested, case-control study

Michela Antonelli et al.

Summary: Despite the high efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, some individuals still become infected with SARS-CoV-2 post-vaccination. Risk factors for post-vaccination infection include frailty in older adults, living in deprived areas, and obesity. Vaccination is associated with reduced odds of severe symptoms and long-duration illness. The findings suggest the importance of targeting at-risk populations and maintaining infection control measures even in vaccinated individuals.

S. F. Lumley et al.

Summary: In a longitudinal study of seropositive and seronegative health care workers undergoing asymptomatic and symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 testing, the presence of anti-spike or anti-nucleocapsid IgG antibodies was associated with a substantially reduced risk of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection in the ensuing 6 months.

Impact and effectiveness of mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations, and deaths following a nationwide vaccination campaign in Israel: an observational study using national surveillance data

Eric J. Haas et al.

Summary: This study assessed the real-world effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 in Israel, showing high efficacy in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections, hospitalizations, severe disease, and death. As vaccine coverage increased, there were marked declines in SARS-CoV-2 outcomes, indicating that COVID-19 vaccination can help control the pandemic.

Symptomatic post-vaccination SARS-CoV-2 infections in healthcare workers- A multicenter cohort study

Raju Vaishya et al.

Summary: The study showed that a small percentage of healthcare workers in India experienced symptomatic infections after receiving COVID-19 vaccines, which were predominantly mild and did not result in hospitalization or death. Both vaccines provided similar protection, and receiving two vaccine doses significantly reduced the risk of symptomatic infection.

Evidence for increased breakthrough rates of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern in BNT162b2-mRNA-vaccinated individuals

Talia Kustin et al.

Summary: Breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infections post-vaccination may be caused by B.1.1.7 or B.1.351 variants, indicating the importance of robust vaccination. Reduced vaccine effectiveness against these variants was observed in the study, highlighting the need for continued surveillance and enhanced vaccination efforts.

SARS-CoV-2 infection after COVID-19 immunization in healthcare workers: A retrospective, pilot study

Raju Vaishya et al.

Summary: The study found that 2.63% of healthcare workers contracted SARS-CoV-2 after receiving COVID-19 vaccination, with 76.5% fully vaccinated and 23.5% partially vaccinated. The odds of infection were higher in females due to their greater involvement in patient care. Only two individuals required hospitalization, none needed ICU admission, and there were no deaths.
