The enactment of social justice in HPE practice: how context(s) comes to matter

Summary: This article explores the constitution of social justice pedagogies in health and physical education (HPE) across Sweden, Norway, and New Zealand, and how HPE teaching practice can be understood from the perspectives of regulative, normative, and cultural elements of social justice. The study finds that institutionalized governing systems influence the enactment of social justice differently in these three countries, and highlights the impact of regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive elements on practice.

Kicking at the habitus: students' reading of critical pedagogy in PETE

Summary: This paper reports on a research project exploring how the biographies of 19 physical education teacher education students mediate their understanding of their program with a critical pedagogy philosophy. Using Bourdieuian concepts, the study found that students' readings of the program and its impact on their habitus varied. The findings suggest that students' biographies influenced and were shaped by both coursework and practicum experiences in different ways.
