The Most Vulnerable Poor: Clientelism Among Slum Dwellers

M. Victoria Murillo et al.

Summary: Due to factors such as insecure land tenure, lack of access to resources, and exposure to environmental shocks, slum dwellers are more vulnerable to clientelistic arrangements. This vulnerability is exploited by politicians and brokers to politicize resource access, leading to a higher prevalence of clientelism among slum dwellers than non-slum dwellers. Understanding the different responses to clientelistic arrangements between slum dwellers and non-slum dwellers could provide valuable insights into the dynamics of clientelism.
