Servitization and performance: the moderating effect of supply chain integration

Huashan Li et al.

Summary: This research examines the role of supply chain integration in moderating the relationship between servitization and performance. Drawing on the resource-based view and transaction cost economics, the study identifies the benefits and disadvantages of supply chain integration in the context of servitization. The findings, based on international survey data from 931 manufacturing business units, indicate that basic services are positively associated with sales growth, while advanced services are positively associated with return on sales (ROS) growth. The results also show that supplier integration strengthens the relationship between basic services and sales growth, while customer integration strengthens the relationship between advanced services and ROS growth but weakens the relationship between basic services and ROS growth. These findings highlight the importance of aligning supplier and customer integration with different types of services to maximize the benefits of servitization.

Trapped in the supply chain? Digital servitization strategies and power relations in the case of an industrial technology supplier

Philipp Mosch et al.

Summary: Digital servitization changes power dynamics in supply chains, especially for upstream firms. Research finds that for industrial suppliers, success in deploying digitalized product-service systems depends on not only digital capabilities, but also on establishing close connections with end-users and building trust with OEM customers. Power shifts towards dominant actors with the advent of digital servitization, rather than solely benefiting downstream firms.
