Assessing the impact of a restrictive opioid prescribing law in West Virginia

Cara L. Sedney et al.

Summary: The study found that the implementation of SB 273 in West Virginia led to a significant 22.1% decrease in overall opioid prescriptions and a small change in average daily MME. However, there was no association between the legislation and first-time opioid prescriptions or days' supply of opioids. Control experiments with benzodiazepine prescriptions did not show any relationship to the law.

Prescription drug monitoring programs, opioid abuse, and crime

Dhaval Dave et al.

Summary: The study shows that mandatory access PDMPs can reduce overall crime rate by 5%, especially in terms of reducing assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. These results suggest that appropriately designed PDMPs are effective in mitigating the negative consequences of opioid misuse and that opioid policies can have important spillover effects into crime.
