Objectifying the body positive movement: The effects of sexualizing and digitally modifying body-positive images on Instagram

Megan A. Vendemia et al.

Summary: Through an online experiment, this study found that the degree of sexualization and digital modification of body-positive images on social media can influence female viewers' evaluations, potentially leading to increased endorsement of traditional beauty ideals and perceptions of self-serving sharing intentions. Additionally, sexualized body-positive images may instigate sexual objectification of both others and oneself.

Body Positivity, but not for everyone: The role of model size in exposure effects on women's mood, body satisfaction, and food choice

Kathleen Simon et al.

Summary: The study found that viewing BoPo posts featuring average-size women can improve women's positive mood, while viewing posts featuring larger women does not have this effect. There were no significant effects on healthy behaviors and body satisfaction, but women who viewed BoPo posts of larger women may have a stronger association between hunger and calories selected.

Summary: The study found that body size has a greater influence on stereotypes than sexualization, and stereotypes about sexualized women differ between White and Black women. Additionally, participants' gender and race also affect stereotype ratings. Viewing sexualized images is associated with higher endorsement of sexualized gender stereotypes, particularly in women.

Beyond Objectification: Understanding the Correlates and Consequences of Sexualization for Black and White Adolescent Girls

Petal Grower et al.

Summary: While objectification theory suggests negative effects of self-objectification on adolescent girls, there is limited research on how objectification and sexualization impact mental health for youth of color. This study found that body surveillance and enjoyment of sexualization are related to diminished well-being for adolescent girls, with race also moderating these effects. Future research should further examine the implications of enjoyment of sexualization on mental health for youth of color.
