Using computational essays to scaffold professional physics practice

Tor Ole Odden et al.

Summary: This article introduces a curricular innovation aimed at helping students experience authentic physics inquiry, focusing on computational modeling and scientific communication. Using a new type of assignment called a "computational essay," the educational design was implemented over two semesters at the University of Oslo. Initial findings from this implementation suggest that computational essays can play a key role in introducing students to open-ended, inquiry-based work and setting the foundation for future computational research.

What really impacts the use of active learning in undergraduate STEM education? Results from a national survey of chemistry, mathematics, and physics instructors

Naneh Apkarian et al.

Summary: The survey data on 3769 instructors investigated six common beliefs about the usage of active learning in introductory STEM courses, revealing a focus on both contextual and individual factors. While instructors were found to be able to employ active learning in all situations, trends in the data generally aligned with beliefs regarding the impact of these factors on usage. These results have implications for institutional and departmental policies to support the utilization of active learning.

The Curious Construct of Active Learning

Doug Lombardi et al.

Summary: The study examines active learning from the perspectives of psychology and discipline-based education research (DBER), recognizing the diversity in meanings of the construct. It highlights the importance of learners being active agents during instruction and the social construction of meaning in addition to individual cognitive construction of knowledge, within the proposed construction-of-understanding ecosystem framework aimed at advancing research and practice in undergraduate STEM education.
