The Social Divide of Social Distancing: Shelter-in-Place Behavior in Santiago During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Aldo Carranza et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of voluntary shelter-in-place directives and lockdowns on mobility and infection rates in Santiago, Chile. Using mobile phone data, the researchers find that the reductions in mobility due to social distancing measures are highly dependent on socioeconomic levels, with higher income communities showing larger reductions. They also find that mobility is a significant predictor of infection rates, with a 10% increase in mobility correlating to a 5% increase in the rate of infection.

Estimation of crowding factors for public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic in Santiago, Chile

Paul Basnak et al.

Summary: A sharp decrease in public transport demand has been observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey conducted in Santiago, Chile revealed that mode preferences have changed, with crowding and face mask use significantly impacting public transport choices. Women are more sensitive to the use of face masks in public transport, while young and low-income individuals are less sensitive to crowding. Disinfection of vehicles, as well as the perception of health risk, cleanliness, safety, and comfort, also play important roles in mode choice.

Identifying Food Labeling Effects on Consumer Behavior

Sebastian Araya et al.

Summary: We examined the effects of a large-scale mandatory food labeling regulation on consumer behavior. The study found that warning labels decrease demand and purchase probabilities in the cereal category, especially among medium-low socioeconomic groups. The results suggest that the warning label effect is consistent with information disclosure influencing consumers' choices when the advertised information is unexpected.

Tracing surface and airborne SARS-CoV-2 RNA inside public buses and subway trains

Teresa Moreno et al.

Summary: A study on public transport in Barcelona during the summer of 2020 found traces of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in surface and air samples, with more viral remnants on bus surfaces compared to trains. Although signs of viral RNA were detected, they were considered unlikely to be infectious. Vigilant attention to ventilation systems and regular disinfection of vehicles are necessary to effectively eliminate viral traces, especially during peak COVID-19 periods.
