Fluoxetine and Nutrients Removal from Aqueous Solutions by Phycoremediation

Andreia D. M. Silva et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that microalgae can effectively remove pharmaceutical residues from wastewater, with living microalgae showing slightly higher removal rates than non-living ones. Furthermore, living Chlorella vulgaris in immobilized state exhibits better removal efficiency, which can contribute to enhancing wastewater treatment outcomes.

Recovery and reuse of alginate in an immobilized algae reactor

Olga Murujew et al.

Summary: The use of immobilized microalgae for nutrients removal from wastewater has shown great potential. A proof-of-concept for alginate recycling using sodium citrate as a dissolving agent can reduce operational costs significantly. Both virgin and recycled alginate beads have comparable removal rates for phosphorus and nitrogen compounds, with approximately 70% alginate recovery achievable at labscale resulting in a 60% reduction in net operational costs.

Polysaccharides as Support for Microbial Biomass-Based Adsorbents with Applications in Removal of Heavy Metals and Dyes

Alexandra Cristina Blaga et al.

Summary: The use of biosorbents for industrial effluent decontamination has been investigated for developing inexpensive and effective techniques. Different natural microbial biomass types containing natural polymers are utilized as biosorbents, showing outstanding biosorption abilities for effluent treatment, thus improving environmental sustainability. However, large-scale biosorption experiments are needed to select suitable biomass and polymeric support for efficient treatment processes.

Immobilized Microalgae-Based Photobioreactor for CO2 Capture (IMC-CO2PBR): Efficiency Estimation, Technological Parameters, and Prototype Concept

Marcin Debowski et al.

Summary: Microalgae-mediated CO2 sequestration is an effective strategy to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions, but feeding flue and exhaust gas into algae-based systems can limit CO2 uptake. This study developed an innovative trickle bed reactor using immobilized algae to capture CO2, with promising results in terms of biomass yields and CO2 removal rates. Basic process parameters, a functional model, optimized lighting system, component proposals, and automation and control system recommendations were also provided for potential full-scale implementation.
