If wages fell during a recession

Joy Buchanan et al.

Summary: Many economies exhibit downward wage rigidity, and employers hold wages rigid due to concerns over morale. An experiment shows that effort falls after workers experience a wage cut, partially confirming the morale theory. However, half of the employers in the experiment cut wages and incur losses. Real wage cuts do not have a significant effect on effort under nominal inflation.

Economic stability promotes gift-exchange in the workplace

Hernan Bejarano et al.

Summary: The study shows that changes in economic conditions can lead to disagreements between workers and employers regarding reference wages, weakening the gift-exchange relationship and resulting in lower production levels and wages. Therefore, the intensity of labor conflicts increases when economic conditions are unstable.
