Individualism, formal institutional environments, and bank capital decisions

Mohammad Bitar et al.

Summary: This study examines how individualism affects bank capital decisions worldwide and at the state level in the United States. The findings reveal that individualism is negatively associated with bank regulatory capital independent of formal institutional environments. Additionally, effective legal enforcement amplifies the negative effect of individualism on bank regulatory capital. Moreover, banks in individualistic states in the United States hold less regulatory capital compared to banks in collectivist states, with the impact of individualism being magnified by effective state-level legal enforcement.

How Did Depositors Respond to COVID-19?

Ross Levine et al.

Summary: During the pandemic, banks experienced massive deposit inflows, with deposit interest rates in counties with higher COVID-19 infection rates falling more than in counties with lower infection rates. Evidence suggests that higher local COVID-19 infection rates are associated with households' greater anxiety about future job and income losses, leading to reduced spending and increased deposits.

Summary: The study examines factors that influenced government responses to COVID-19 in over 150 countries, finding differences between authoritarian and democratic regimes, unitary and federalist states, and countries with different levels of freedom and public health spending. However, most countries caught up with stronger responses within three to four months after the pandemic hit. Women leaders did not show more aggressive policies, and neither did island nations or countries that experienced the pandemic later.
