Water Resources, Forced Migration and Tensions with Host Communities in the Nigerian Part of the Lake Chad Basin

Frederic Noel Kamta et al.

Summary: The study found that in northeast Nigeria, water scarcity is a major factor driving migration, with insecurity and conflict being more significant drivers. There is also a potential for tensions between IDPs and host communities, highlighting the need for measures to improve relations between the two groups. Efficient management of water resources is essential to prevent water scarcity from becoming a significant driver of migration and to strengthen community resilience in northern Nigeria.

Natural hazards, internal migration and protests in Bangladesh

Kristina Petrova

Summary: The study examines the impact of experiencing natural hazards on household decisions to migrate internally, and investigates whether this migration flow increases the number of protests in migrant-receiving areas. Findings suggest that flood hazards and loss of assets increase the likelihood of internal migration, but hazard-related migration does not lead to increased protest frequency in migrants' districts of destination.

Environmental migrants and social-movement participation

Vally Koubi et al.

Summary: The displacement of people due to climatic changes presents challenges for society and governance, and climate-induced rural-to-urban migration may contribute to social movement participation. Environmental migrants are more likely to join social movements promoting migrant rights, which has important policy implications.
