Agent-based modelling to simulate farmers' sustainable decisions: Farmers' interaction and resulting green consciousness evolution

Summary: Based on survey data for 1109 farmers in five provinces on the North China Plain, this study explores the formation mechanism and impact of peer effects on the adoption behavior of green control techniques among farmers. The results show that peer effects exist among core and intermediate farmers, but not among marginal farmers. The effects mainly come from the learning imitation mechanism and are strengthened by farmers' attention allocation.

Injunctive vs. descriptive social norms and reference group dependence

Summary: We experimentally investigate the role and reference group dependence in the elicitation of injunctive and descriptive social norms. The results show that elicited norms are generally stable, but dictators tend to shift injunctive norms in a self-serving direction when coordinating only among themselves. Additionally, participants overestimate the divergences in coordination outcomes and descriptive social norms have a stronger correlation with the dictator's allocation choices than injunctive norms.

Understanding pollution behavior among farmers: Exploring the influence of social networks and political identity on reducing straw burning in China

The findings indicate that social networks have a positive impact on farmers' straw-burning behavior, but this effect is weakened by external organizations and political identity. The study suggests that solely relying on prohibition policies is insufficient and attention should be given to external organizations and political identity factors in order to promote farmers' responsibility towards sustainable agriculture.

Effects of risk preferences and social networks on adoption of genomics by Chinese hog farmers

Summary: The outbreak of African Swine Fever has had a massive impact on the Chinese hog industry, and this study explores the motivations of hog farmers to adopt genomics technology for breeding disease-resistant hogs. Furthermore, the study finds that the adoption time frame of a hog farmer is influenced by the time frames of other closely related farmers.

The results show that industrial structure transformation and upgrading when participating in GVCs can help mitigate pollution emissions expansion in developing countries like Russia and Brazil, but the adjustment effect is relatively weak. China and India face the dilemma of low-end locking in GVCs, intensifying the pressure on reducing carbon emissions domestically.
