Working Memory Predicts New Word Learning Over and Above Existing Vocabulary and Nonverbal IQ

Shelley I. Gray et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the extent to which working memory explained variance in word learning. The results showed that working memory significantly explained the variance in both phonological and semantic word learning, over and above the contributions of expressive vocabulary and nonverbal IQ.

Phonological working memory and central executive function differ in children with typical development and dyslexia

Mary Alt et al.

Summary: This study compared the working memory performance of monolingual English-speaking second-grade children with dyslexia to those with typical development, finding that the latter performed better. Invariance testing showed that the working memory model validated for typically developing children was also valid for children with dyslexia, with differences in the Focus-of-Attention/Visuospatial factor potentially explained by group differences in non-verbal intelligence and language skills.

ERP Mismatch Negativity Amplitude and Asymmetry Reflect Phonological and Rapid Automatized Naming Skills in English-Speaking Kindergartners

Summary: The amplitude of MMN may be related to phonological representations and the ability to manipulate them, while MMN laterality may reflect differences in brain processes that support the automaticity needed for reading.
