Review of the potential application of bacteria in self-healing and the improving properties of concrete/mortar

Parya Dinarvand et al.

Summary: The precipitation of calcium carbonate caused by bacteria's metabolic activity is a good method to improve concrete performance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of using bacteria for crack healing and improving concrete properties, by introducing effective parameters in this field. Results showed that by reducing structural pores, bacterial involvement at a concentration of 10(5)-10(7) cells/ml led to an increase in compressive strength by up to 42.5% and a decrease in chloride penetration by up to 69%. The encapsulation method also showed higher efficiency in crack healing compared to other methods.

Sustainable repairing and improvement of concrete properties using artificial bacterial consortium

Hala H. A. Mahmoud et al.

Summary: By constructing a bacterial consortium using Bacillus flexus MK-FYT-3 and Bacillus haynesii MK-NW-9, it was possible to effectively repair concrete cracks and improve the properties of concrete, including increasing compressive and tensile strength and reducing permeability. The bio-concrete showed white precipitates around cracks on the surface, leading to almost complete sealing of the concrete.

Recycled sand from sandstone waste: A new source of high-quality fine aggregate

Yubin Cao et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the feasibility and performance of using recycled sandstone waste in mortar manufacturing. The recycled sandstone sand shows better particle distribution and microscopic morphology compared to river sand, leading to improved mechanical properties and alkali silica reaction performance in mortar. Although the workability of the recycled sand is slightly lower, it can be improved by adjusting the water to binder ratio or adding water reducer. However, potential uncertain risks exist in terms of alkali silica reaction, which can be mitigated by using calcined clay or fly ash.

Effect of waste sandstone microfines on mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and permeability properties of concrete

Kusum Rathore et al.

Summary: This research explores the potential of using sand made from quarry waste of sandstone as a complete replacement for river sand in concrete. The study demonstrates that the moderate use of sandstone microfines can improve the mechanical strength and durability of concrete, addressing the issue of natural sand shortage.

Properties of sustainable self-compacting concrete incorporating discarded sandstone slurry

Prarthita Basu et al.

Summary: The study found that partially replacing portland pozzolana cement with sandstone slurry can serve as a sustainable alternative for self-compacting concrete, reducing raw material usage and avoiding environmental pollution caused by uncontrolled dumping of sandstone by-products. However, it is important to note that the special shape and surface texture of the sandstone slurry may decrease workability, necessitating an increase in the dosage of superplasticizer.

Strength, permeation, freeze-thaw resistance, and microstructural properties of self-compacting concrete containing sandstone waste

Prarthita Basu et al.

Summary: This investigation explores the potential utilization of sandstone slurry as an eco-friendly alternative material in self-compacting concrete, analyzing its properties and performance in comparison to traditional concrete. The study found that while the modified concrete had slightly lower strength parameters than the control concrete, these parameters improved with increased curing ages. Partial substitution of sandstone slurry for Portland Pozzolana cement up to 15% showed promising durability results under certain conditions.

Environmentally sustainable use of sandstone slurry in self-compacting concrete

Prarthita Basu et al.

Summary: The study found that incorporating dried sandstone slurry in self-compacting concrete increases its porosity and sorptivity coefficient, leading to a decrease in compressive strength and depth of carbonation. Additionally, as the percentage of sandstone slurry replacement increases, the formation of calcium-silicate-hydrate gel decreases, further degrading the mechanical properties of the concrete.
