Incident Colorectal Cancer in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Benedetto Neri et al.

Summary: The sequence chronic inflammation-dysplasia-cancer is involved in the development of several gastrointestinal cancers. The characteristics of IBD, including CRC-related symptoms at onset, play a role in the long-term outcome of CRC in IBD patients. CRC has a higher incidence in UC and CD patients. Surveillance programs should focus on high-risk subgroups of patients.

Colorectal Cancer in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Mechanisms and Management

Shailja C. Shah et al.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Chronic inflammation plays a key role in the development of neoplastic progression, resulting in dysplastic precursor lesions. Colitis-associated CRC shares molecular similarities with sporadic CRC and the microbiome and host immune system may also play a role. However, further research is needed to understand the specific molecular differences and their role in inflammation-associated cancers.

Current status of IBD and surgery of Crohn's disease in Thailand

Woramin Riansuwan et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has a lower incidence in Thailand, especially ulcerative colitis, with improvements in management leading to reduced hospitalization and colectomy rates. Most Crohn's disease patients present with an inflammatory phenotype, but diagnosis remains challenging, requiring increased awareness among physicians to improve early diagnosis, prevent complications, and reduce surgery rates.

Summary: The study suggests that using fibrin glue as an adjunct to conventional medical therapy may be an effective and safe treatment for perianal fistulas in patients with Crohn's disease. Patients who received combination therapy had a higher rate of complete clinical remission at 1 year.

Fistula-Related Cancer in Crohn's Disease: A Systematic Review

Andromachi Kotsafti et al.

Summary: Cancer arising at the site of a chronic perianal fistula is rare in patients with Crohn's disease, with unclear relationship with SCC development. Chronic inflammation, delayed healing, and cell turnover may play key roles. Early diagnosis may improve outcomes in these difficult-to-diagnose cases.

Postoperative outcomes after preoperative ustekinumab exposure in patients with Crohn's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Rajat Garg et al.

Summary: Recent studies have conflicting data on the risk of postoperative complications in patients with Crohn's disease exposed to ustekinumab (UST) preoperatively. However, this systematic review and meta-analysis found that the postoperative complication rate in patients with preoperative UST exposure may be similar to that for anti-TNF medication, suggesting further prospective studies are needed to validate these findings.
