Nonglutaraldehyde crosslinked bioprosthetic heart valves based on 2-iso-cyanatoethyl methacrylate crosslinked porcine pericardium with improved properties of stability, cytocompatibility and anti-calcification

Cheng Zheng et al.

Summary: Valvular heart diseases (VHD) are common in the elderly, with valve replacement being the most effective treatment. Using 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (ICM) as a crosslinking agent can improve the stability of porcine pericardium and potentially be an alternative to glutaraldehyde in bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs) crosslinking.

Sodium lignosulfonate cross-linked bioprosthetic heart valve materials for enhanced cytocompatibility, improved hemocompatibility, and reduced calcification

Shumang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the performance of bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV) by cross-linking porcine pericardium (PP) with sodium lignosulfonate (SLS). The results showed that SLS-crosslinked PP (SLS-PP) had improved cell proliferation, reduced protein adhesion, and decreased calcification compared to glutaraldehyde-crosslinked PP (Glut-PP). SLS is suggested as a potential alternative cross-linker for BHVs.

Collagen fibre-mediated mechanical damage increases calcification of bovine pericardium for use in bioprosthetic heart valves

Alix Whelan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that mechanical damage drives calcification of glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardial (GLBP) leaflets in bioprosthetic heart valves. Specimens with lower fatigue life were associated with higher calcification, and collagen fiber architecture influences both the mechanical performance and calcification potential of GLBP in patient BHVs.
