A bias evaluation checklist for predictive models and its pilot application for 30-day hospital readmission models

H. Echo Echo Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a bias evaluation checklist for assessing the potential bias of predictive models in healthcare. The authors identify bias issues in four selected models and propose that their checklist can be used to address and eliminate bias before model development or deployment. The study highlights the importance of evaluating bias in predictive models and its implications for healthcare outcomes.

Racial Disparities in the Use of Surgical Procedures in the US

Matthew J. Best et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the national rates of use for 9 major surgical procedures from 2012 to 2017 to determine whether national initiatives have improved racial disparities in the use of surgical procedures in the US. The results showed that racial disparities persisted for all analyzed procedures and worsened for one-third of them, regardless of US census division, hospital teaching status, or insurance status. Further efforts are needed to reduce these disparities and improve healthcare equality.
