Stimulus-Responsive Nanoparticle-Integrated Dissolving Microneedles for Synergetic Chemo-Photothermal Therapy of Superficial Skin Tumors

Xing-Qun Pu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel type of stimulus-responsive nanoparticle-integrated dissolving microneedle (DMN) was designed and fabricated for transdermal drug delivery systems. The DMNs were made of hyaluronic acid (HA) and contained nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin (DOX). The DMNs showed good biocompatibility and excellent photothermal effect, and the release of the drug-loaded nanoparticles could be controlled by near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. The chemo-photothermal therapeutic efficacy of the DMNs was superior to single chemotherapeutic efficacy.

Microneedle array with a pH-responsive polymer coating and its application in smart drug delivery for wound healing

Asad Ullah et al.

Summary: In order to successfully treat wounds, therapeutics must be delivered directly to the wound. However, barriers such as necrotic tissue and biofilms make it challenging to efficiently deliver antibiotics to wounds. By utilizing porous polymer coatings on microneedles for automatic release of therapeutics in response to wound pH conditions, researchers were able to significantly enhance therapeutic results for wound infections.

Improved Dermal and Transdermal Delivery of Curcumin with SmartFilms and Nanocrystals

Ralph W. Eckert et al.

Summary: The study used smartFilm technology to improve the dermal penetration efficacy of curcumin, showing better results compared to nanosuspensions and bulk suspensions. Increasing the number of curcumin particles in the suspensions was found to increase the passive dermal penetration. These findings suggest a new dermal penetration mechanism for active compounds from nano-particulate drug delivery systems, which could lead to the development of topical drug products with improved penetration efficacy in the future.

A Comprehensive Review of Microneedles: Types, Materials, Processes, Characterizations and Applications

Faisal Khaled Aldawood et al.

Summary: Drug delivery through the skin offers advantages such as avoiding hepatic metabolism and maintaining steady plasma concentration, but only a limited number of drugs with ideal properties can achieve therapeutic concentrations. Microneedles are a promising physical enhancement method to expand the spectrum of drugs for transdermal delivery. Different materials used for microneedles have implications for transdermal drug delivery, but challenges in sustained delivery, efficacy, cost-effective fabrication, and large-scale manufacturing remain. Microneedles have potential impact on drug delivery, vaccine delivery, disease diagnostics, and cosmetics applications.
